Weekly Check-In: May 17, 2023

Damn, I lost my stride. Not only did I not draft this post at all before it was ready to go up, but I really haven’t done a lot of reading in the last week. I ended up having a lot going on this weekend, and though I did spend a solid few hours working through one book, I was mostly prepping for my trip this week and trying to keep an eye on my sick cat, who had a stomach bug for forty-eight hours, and is luckily doing much better now, but was consuming a lot of my attention on Sunday.

recently finished

Obviously, I had to buy the sequel to Seven Faceless Saints because it checked so many of my damn boxes, and I was hyped by that potential villain ending. I wanted this to end à la Horrid by Katrina Leno, and though it didn’t quite go that hard, it was a lot more sinister than I was expecting, and I freaking loved it. The conversation around religion was so well done, and I can’t wait to see where it all goes next.

currently reading

I really thought I was going to finish Belladonna Monday night, but, again, it’s been a bit chaotic with my cat, and I’ve been distracted trying to take care of her and just find space to sleep. I am kind of glad that I’ll only be finishing this up either tonight or tomorrow because I’m headed to Scotland Thursday evening, and my worst character trait is finishing books in the damn airport, so I really don’t want to bring a book that I’m nearly done with.

what’s next

I’m bringing four books to Scotland, and I’m hopeful that that’ll a) be enough and b) that I’ll get through them all, which are completely opposite statements from each other, but I’ve been reading more again, so I’m nervous it won’t be enough, but I also tend to not read a ton on vacation, so hopefully I’ll be able to strike the right balance of finishing the fourth one on the way home, like I did last year in Portugal.

Anywho, I’m bringing:

  1. Certain Dark Things by Sivia Moreno-Garcia
  2. Base Notes by Lara Elena Donnelly
  3. The Heart Forger by Rin Chupeco
  4. Legendborn by Tracy Deonn

I feel like this’ll be a good spread of adult vampires, adult queer historical, young adult slow burn witches, and young adult King Arthur fantasy. Those are usually my four modes, plus I’m still listening to Practical Magic and Fellowship of the Ring, so I’m going to have a lot of options!
