Weekly Check-In: April 12, 2023

It’s been such a week of reading! I actually have two books in my recently finished, which hasn’t happened in a while, and I’ve been doing a lot of writing, so it’s been a good last few days. I don’t know if it’ll keep up, but I’m going to enjoy it while it lasts.

recently finished

Nocturne had its inaugural book club this past weekend, and it was so much fun to gather with a bunch of other weirdos and get nerdy about books. We read Book of Night, and I really enjoyed it. A lot of the conversation that we had was about how there wasn’t enough description, or it was hella slow-paced, and I was just like, yes it’s Holly Black, this is what she does. This could have easily been 100-200 more pages and been exceptional instead of just pretty good. It felt like it was reaching to be Ninth House, but without the actual heavy lifting that Bardugo did. That said, I five starred it because I had a great time reading it.

I also read This Blood That Binds Us, which I wanted to two star, but I read most of it in one day, so it clearly wasn’t that bad. This was such a moment of delight in my weekend, too, because I started watching What We Do in the Shadows, and every time a commercial came on, I’d read a chapter of this book, so it was just pure vampiric idiocy for five straight hours. Truly the best.

currently reading

Because I’m making 2023 the year of the vampire, I started The Righteous, and I’m barely 100 pages in, but I definitely had to look up a recap of the previous book because I remembered some of it, but not a lot. This is good so far, and I’m glad to be back in this world, and holy shit, but it’s a quartet?? I usually get frustrated when duologies become trilogies, but I think that negates itself when they become quartets instead because the pacing can kind of work with a duology becoming a quartet, and I did not realize that until I saw this happen, so huh. That’s interesting.

what’s next

I think I am going to take a break on the vampires for a hot second because it’s been two books in a row plus a TV show plus writing about them, so I don’t want to tax myself. I did do a lot of digging to find ten new vampire books, though, so they’re going to be sticking around for a while because I miss them, damn it, and I want more content.

That said, you’ll notice that Silvia Moreno-Garcia’s book disappeared from this without ever having been read. Sad. Anywho, A Witch’s Guide to Fake Dating a Demon is still on here, and maybe someday I’ll actually read it. Maybe? I don’t know. I’d also like to start The Shattered City, and I do have nothing this weekend, so it’s looking promising that I’ll be able to finish The Righteous and get to both of these, but given that The Shattered City is hella long, it’s also possible that it’ll be on here for a full week. I keep thinking about it, though, and my preorder stack is starting to teeter a little, so we’ve got to get some of it read.
