WWW: December 29, 2021

ICYMI, I’ve hopped on the what are you reading WWW Wednesday posts, which are hosted by Taking on a World of Words, and my normal Wednesday posts, usually discussions, are moving to Thursdays. I set a way overambitious goal for myself before Christmas break to read four books in four days, and while I did not manage that, I got pretty close!

what did you recently finish reading?

I did manage to finish Little Thieves pretty quickly, though not quite as quickly as I anticipated. I really wanted to stretch it out because I was enjoying it so much, so rather than read the last 300 pages in one fell swoop, I split it into two days. I also managed to start & finish All of Us Villains, which ended up not being all that fun to do, and I had to drag myself through the last half of it, but we’ll save all that for my wrap-up in a few days.

I also started Year of the Witch by Temperance Alden, got fifty pages in and was smacked in the face by some wild instances of transphobia, anti-science, and anti-feminist rhetoric, went NOPE, and DNF’d the hell out of it. Oh! And I read Pepper’s Rules for Secret Sleuthing! I’d also wanted to read The Monsters of Rookhaven, but that didn’t quite end up happening, but two out of four ain’t that bad!

what are you currently reading?

What was the fourth one, I hear you asking. Yes, of course it was Chain of Iron, which I did not crack open on Christmas like I said I was going to, even after I called myself out on Instagram and was like bro if you don’t start this, you’re going to have to lug a 700 page book to work. Well, guess who couldn’t fit Chain of Iron into my purse, so I had to carry it separately.

I started it on Monday, which is just par for the course for me, at this point, and I’m loving it. I’m a little mad that I made myself finish the Shadowhunters universe when Chain of Thorns doesn’t come out until the end of 2022, but also glad that I’m reading it so close to finishing Chain of Gold, so what can you do. This is probably going to be my last book for the year given that it is nearly 700 pages, and I’d like to not rush through it too much.

what do you think you’ll read next?

I don’t know! I really don’t. Now that I’ve finished Shadowhunters and gotten to a pretty good place in my preorders, I’m not sure what’s up next. I have an eight book TBR for January, so there’s plenty that I could read, but nothing that is really calling out to me. I did set The Monsters of Rookhaven on the top of my TBR, and I did want to read it this week, so maybe I’ll snag that next. If I had to choose my first book of the year from my TBR, I’d say I’m going to read Fire With Fire by Destiny Soria first, so let’s go with that.

Ah, how did you enjoy Pepper’s Rules? I thought it was a solid MG mystery. I have been hearing some buzz about The Monsters of Rookhaven – I have another book by the author on my TBR (Pog) so I’m going to try to get to it first.

Pepper’s Rules was amazing! I sped through it, and I really hope McDonald is going to do more with those characters because they were such a delight. I’m hopefully finishing Chain of Iron tonight and starting Rookhaven tomorrow!
