While reading Return of the Thief recently, I unintentionally tweeted a list of characters that I’m still screaming about because I was currently screaming about Eugenides (yes, he’s on this list), and then realized that I haven’t screamed about any of those characters recently, so here we are! I’ve listed them in alphabetical order by their names because I’d probably end up giving myself an aneurism trying to actually decide who I loved more.
Y’all, even if we weren’t doing alphabetical order, you know that Clary Fray would be near the top. SHE’S MY GIRL! I wrote an entire post just loving on Clary & Alina Starkhov (it was forever ago, I’m not digging it up) because I feel like they get so much unnecessary hate. Clary is easily one of my favorite MCs in general, but I’ve got a special list in my head of favorite women, and she’s right in the top five. I just love her so damn much. She’s so real, and I know one of the reasons people don’t like her sometimes is because she whines a lot, but I GET THAT! If I was unceremoniously dropped into a world I’d never known about before, I, too, would be freaking out a lot! Her reactions makes so much sense, and I just love watching her interact with the world.
The man himself, Eugenides the Thief. Gosh, if there was ever a time during a single Queen’s Thief book where I didn’t just EUGENIDESSSSSSSS yeet myself off of this planet, then I am LYING. Bold-faced lie, y’all, Eugenides is going to consistently make me scream because I just adore him. One of my favorite things is when Turner has the whole book in someone else’s POV, and we only get to see glimpses of Eugenides, and it almost feels like the love of a cat, I’m like ooooooh there is he errybody pay attention!!! It’s so ridiculous, but this conniving little brat is one of my all-time favorites.
Look, did I #hollandvosijkprotectionsquad for the entirety of the Shades of Magic trilogy? YOU BETCHA. I love when my friends start reading it, and they’re hate keysmashing about Holland to me, and I’m just sitting there cackling, like just you wait! I will step in front of all weapons coming at my sweet, sad boy, don’t even look at him wrong. He’s one of my favorite types of character, too, the misunderstood one, and ughhhhhh, VE just does it so well, the slow reveal behind why he is the way he is, and I’m talking myself straight into a circle of rereading these.
The true tragedy in this world is that there’s no fanart of Jamshid e-Pramukh; or, at least, none that I can find. Jamshid, like Eugenides and Karou, is someone that I just quietly scream JAMSHIIIIIIIIIID while I’m reading. When I was finishing up the last 300 or so pages of The Empire of Gold, my sister actually came and knocked on my door to see if I was alright because I was just alternately screaming his name and sobbing into my pillow for a solid two hours. It was glorious.
It’s my girl, KAROUUUUU! It’s practically guttural at this point. Someone says Karou, and I’m screeching off like a bird. Karou is, hands down, my favorite woman in all of fantasy literature, probably just in all of literature. I both want to be her and be her best friend, or just live on the outskirts of her life with my face pressed up against the glass. Gosh, if only we could have dozens more books set in the DOSAB universe, I just want Karou as a MC forever and ever.
Not only are we getting one LOTR character, we’re getting three, technically, because Morgoth & Sauron come as a package deal for me. I have slowly fallen in love with their characters over the last almost two years, and wow, what a wild ride it has been. It started with reading The Silmarillion last summer, which was my first foray into Tolkien’s works outside of the main trilogy, and I just–I am never going to be the same. I recently claimed Sauron as my favorite villain of all time, which is crazy, I know, particularly with how much I’ve fawned over Morgoth in the past, but put them together? Man, that is my weak spot.
Another character with no fanart that I can find is Sam Roth, though I kind of understand this one since the Wolves of Mercy Falls series is from the early 2000s, and fanart was definitely not as an explosive thing then as it is now. It’s a damn shame, though, because I’m sure y’all could cook up things that would absolutely break my heart from that series with Sam & Grace. He’s one of my original favorite YA characters, and he’s going to consistently make me swoon at every given opportunity.
Of course, this list wouldn’t exist without my actual favorite character of all time, in all of literature, ever–Samwise Gamgee. I’ve literally waxed poetic about how much I love Sam, from devoting an entire post to why he’s the best, to pretty consistently weeping about him on posts that have nothing to do with LOTR, to threading him through my yoga practices, and probably a whole lot more. He’s just so sweet and kind and wonderful, and I will never love anyone like I love him.
In a truly wild turn of events, Wylan van Eck is my favorite Six of Crows character. I know, it boggles the mind, but it’s true. Someone asked me, point blank, no hesitations, and he was immediately who came to mind, so I’ve got to go with that gut reaction. I have a lot of the same feelings about Wylan as I do Holland, in that I want to wrap them both in blankets, ply them with tea, and protect them from the whole world. Wylan is just the cutest little thing in the world, and while he’ll definitely explode his own way out of trouble, he also needs a huge and probably a sweater and lots of cookies.
Annnd, last, but definitely not least, is the final character with no fanart–Zebulon Finch. This one definitely makes sense to me because I’ve never actually talked to anyone else who has read these books? I also really don’t know what it is about Zebulon that makes me love him so much because he’s such an asshole, and he does truly horrendous things, but I also kind of weirdly root for him when I’m least expecting it? I also periodically think about him and his insane & often gross story on a fairly regular basis, but diving into that collective 1000+ page tome is just–a lot. All of Zebulon is a lot, and it’s part of the reason I love him.
