For the past few years of actually tracking my reading, I’ve had a very specific goal–read everything I purchased in the year previous. The last couple of months have been very preorder-heavy, and while October was full of a bunch of backlist books, I still have some major catching up to do. I also have a few outstanding other goals, too, so this is a list of all the books that I purchased in 2018 and haven’t read yet, and anything that I still haven’t completed as of my last quarterly goal check-in.

I had three reread goals this year, and while I’ve officially given up on one of them (Inheritance cycle), I’m keeping with two of the others. I first read Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo in 2017 (right around this time, actually), and I’ve been desperately wanting to reread it since then, so in honor of the truly incredible new season of Peaky Blinders and how much these two combined have inspired my writing over the last couple years, I’m finally diving back in.

One of my 2019 goals was to read either The Infernal Devices OR The Dark Artifices trilogy. I apparently decided to go with TID in September and read the first two. I would have also read Clockwork Princess by Cassandra Clare if I’d had more time, but alas, October arrived, and I had a massive TBR. I’m definitely accomplishing this goal, though, because I was over the moon with the first two, and I’m super excited to finish this out.

Even the Darkest Stars by Heather Fawcett was one of those books that I went YES PLEASE and put it immediately in my cart because I was that excited, and then I kind of just shrugged at it once it arrived. Why do I do this? It’s not productive at all, and it makes books that I really enjoy just hang out sadly on my shelves forever and a day.

I’ve talked about The Shadow Hour by Melissa Grey enough times that I’m not going to spiel it all again, but this is a must-read before the end of the year. Hopefully, I’ll like this one more than the first and want to continue on with the series, but with this series, that doesn’t really apply to whether or not I’ll read the third. If I end up not liking it and still reading the third, I’m going to seriously put some thought into why this series sticks out in my mind so much.

Girls Like Us: Fighting for a World Where Girls are Not for Sale by Rachel Lloyd is a gifted book, and is a collection of short essays about trafficking. I can’t remember whether I got this for Christmas or my birthday, but I’ve had it for long enough that I really need to crack it open.

I bought The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern in one of those off-hand moments where I spotted it and said, “Oh, everyone in the book community loves this,” and my best friend said, “BUY THIS RIGHT NOW. I CAN’T BELIEVE YOU HAVEN’T READ IT YET.” I’m sure I’m going to love it, it’s just that every time I think about picking it up, I remember everyone’s comparisons to Caraval, and I just–read something else instead.

Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty is another gifted book, but the author is also the sister of the Bronte Mettlestone books that I love so much, so I’m more enticed than normal to read this. I’ve also heard nothing but excellent things about the show, and I’m a big read before watch, so, though it’ll be ages before I ever get around to watching the show, I’d like to have this under my belt so I don’t have an excuse to keep putting it off.

Women Who Run with the Wolves: Myths and Stories of the Wild Woman Archetype by Clarissa Pinkola Estés was gifted to me Halloween of last year, and is one of the few books on this list that I won’t be terribly mad if I don’t get through it. This is pretty dense, and I’ve been told it takes time to read, so I may honestly not even look at tackling this right away.

My other reread goal for this year was the Shades of Magic trilogy by VE Schwab, which I also read a little over two years ago for the first time, and my love for Holland Vosijk knows no bounds, so I’d really love to revisit this sad, angry boy.

Oh my godddd, am I embarrassed Bartimaeus: The Golem’s Eye by Jonathan Stroud is on this list? YOU BETCHA. I adored the first book, but, for some reason, I didn’t immediately buy the second one, and it was only when I was out book-shopping with the friend who gifted me the first one that I was like, “Oh, I should probably pick up the next Bartimaeus while we’re here.” And then promptly never read it. I like this series a lot! Why am I not reading it?!

The last of my gifted books! I read Uglies earlier this year, and my friend only gave me the first two in the series, so once I’ve read Pretties by Scott Westerfeld, I’m either going to just casually wait for her to buy me the third one or not finish the series. It’s not that I don’t like it, it’s that this is really old, and it shows, and it’s the same reason why I haven’t read The Hunger Games. I wasn’t into the hype then, and I’m still not really now, and unless someone hands me them, I’m not going to spend money on them.

I like to finish all of my space books from the previous year before asking for more for Christmas, and The Right Stuff by Tom Wolfe is my last one. I watched the movie this year for it, and absolutely adored it (though I didn’t realize it was three hours long, and started it a little close to my usual bedtime), so I’m really eager to actually read this.

And that is my 2018 list! All counted, it’s about 15 books, but I’ve got two full months and no huge plans other than NaNoWriMo, which I’ll be updating weekly on. 2020 is going to be a lot less busy than this year, though. I went into 2019 with a little over 60 books leftover from 2018, and currently I only have a little over 30 books purchased this year that I still haven’t read. I’m not going to include covers/descriptions, but here they are:
